How to improve your reading skills and vocabulary

At the school you will find our Study Centre – this is a peaceful place where you can study. Another service we have here is lending books, we have lots of books you can borrow or just read at the school.

One of the books we recommend the most is the graded readers (‘graded’ is an adjective which means the level is ‘changed’ or ‘adapted’). These are books where the story is changed for your level of English to help you understand the story and also teach you new vocabulary and grammarWe have books for all levels of English from beginner level to advanced and proficiency levels and there are lots of options, so you will easily find a book which is interesting for you.

We recommend you try to read for 20-30 minutes every day. You can read before or after class at the school, or you can also take a book home and read before bed – you might find it relaxing and good for your English at the same time.

Try to make reading a graded reader part of your daily routine!

Tips for vocabulary

When you read the stories, try writing down new words and using them in sentences.

When you check new words try to use definitions in English and write these in your notebook.

Do not use a translator. If you use a translator, it can make you forget the original meaning of the word and sometimes the meaning or use of the word is lost during the translation process.

If you’re not sure what a word means, use an English to English dictionary to help you. It’ll make the words much easier to remember! You should also try to notice how the word appears in a sentence: is it an adjective before a noun, is it a verb? Is it a formal word?

Most of the graded readers also have vocabulary and grammar practice at the back. Make sure you look at these!

When you are at the school visit the Study Centre and see what books we have! If you’re not sure what to read; ask your teacher to help you choose something!

Reading every day will help to improve your English, expand your vocabulary, and help you to become a better and faster reader in English too!
