Congratulations to Andrea from Colombia on completing her General English course with us. During her time here, Andrea progressed from Intermediate to Upper-Intermediate.

However, what does that mean?

An intermediate-level student can have discussions about lots of different topics such as food or school, they have a good level of vocabulary for each topic and can use a variety of tenses such as present perfect and past perfect. Now that Andrea is upper-intermediate, this means she has learnt talk about more complex topics such as politics and science. She can now use more complex grammar such as mixed conditionals and her vocabulary is more specific and accurate.

Every year, thousands of students come to Malvern House to improve their English – we welcome all levels from an absolute beginner who needs to learn the basics to advanced learners who want to speak with precision and confidence!

Students at Malvern House with their teacher, Michelle, studying hard together to improve their English in our Advanced Level General English class!

Our students come here for a wide variety of reasons such as preparing for university or work, sometimes they’re learning for their hobbies and personal enjoyment. In this class we have students from all over the world, including: Brazil, Russia, Taiwan, and Germany!

Many students have asked us how we manage to teach classes during these challenging times.

We maintain social distancing in all our classrooms – this means students remain 6 feet apart to keep safe, we check the temperatures of our staff and students and we also encourage our students to wash their hands before they go their classrooms. Everybody wears a face mask, and we have a one-way system around the school which means you don’t need to worry about bumping into each other.

This means you can still work on learning English, making your goals a reality, and enjoying yourself at the same time!

Our lessons are now back as normal, but with some very important safety measures to ensure our students keep safe when they’re at school.

We have introduced the following safety measures to ensure you can focus on studying English and not worry about anything:

A one-way system around the school to avoid passing people face-to-face

Temperature checks when you enter the building

All staff and students wear face masks to protect each other

Hand-sanitising facilities throughout the building

Social distancing in the classrooms to avoid being too close to others

Adjusted timetable so you do not need to take busy trains or buses

Regular deep cleaning to keep classrooms safe

We have been gradually welcoming students back to the school and we have now have a lovely community of students from all over the world and of all ages all ready to improve their English and work on achieving their goals!

Hello, welcome to Malvern House in Brighton and welcome to your one minute lesson. Today we are going to look at the grammar structure used to. But when do we use used to? Have a look at this example sentence “When he was younger he used to play football”. But what exactly does this mean? Well, used to is used when we talk about something we did in the past but we no longer do now. So, when he was younger he used to play football. Does he play football now? (no) Did he play football in the past (yes) and how many times did he play football? He played many times, we don’t know exactly how many but he played many, many times in the past. So how do you use used to in a sentence? In a positive sentence its subject plus used to plus infinitive, he used to play football. In a negative sentence its subject plus didn’t plus use to plus infinitive, he didn’t use to play football. But, spot the difference, in the negative sentence, there’s no ‘d’ on the end of use to. So, can you tell us what you used to do when you were younger? If you can, write in the comments below. Thank you very much for joining Malvern House, I hope you enjoyed your one minute lesson, goodbye. today

In the weeks before the interview you should:

Make sure you’ve emailed to confirm you will attend the interview

‘Clean up’ your social media. Recruiters may well look at your Facebook/Instagram profiles

Research the company thoroughly so you can show you’re really interested in working for this specific company…and didn’t just send your CV off to anyone!

Research the interviewer on LinkedIn if possible so you know what to expect and can see what you have in common…but don’t look like a stalker!

Brainstorm questions you might be asked and think about your answers (without memorising because this might make you nervous and will seem unnatural!)

Have details of your referees – or even printed references/testimonials themselves – to take with you

Prepare facts and figures you can mention to demonstrate your past achievements in roles

Role-play the interview with friends or family. Make sure they ask you surprising/challenging questions

Prepare questions to ask the interviewer at the end of the interview

Check your travel route to the interview. Have a ‘plan B’ in case trains are delayed etc.

Hello and welcome to Malvern House in Brighton. Today your one minute lesson is about two sounds that sound similar, /p/ and /b/, what is the difference? With /p/, /p/ there should be air, /p/, leaving your mouth. With /b/, /b/, there’s no air. Try this, take a piece of paper, /p/, /p/, /p/, as you can see the paper moves. /b/, /b/, no movement. Place your hands on your throat and repeat /p/. There shouldn’t be any vibration in your throat or any movement because it’s an unvoiced sound. Now try again with /b/, you should feel some movement and vibration in your throat because it is a voiced sound. Thank you for joining Malvern House in Brighton today, I hope this has helped you with the difference between /p/ and /b/. Goodbye.

Hello and welcome to Malvern House in Brighton. Today your one minute lesson is about the idiom – One Trick Pony. Are we talking about an actual pony? No, we are talking a out a person or a thing that can only do one thing well. So, for example he is a great goalkeeper but he just can’t kick the ball on the field, he’s a one trick pony. Now do you think this is appositive thing to say or a negative thing to say about somebody? It’s actually quite negative ‘cause you are telling that person “hey you can only do one thing”. So our idiom for today, one trick pony. Do you know any one trick ponies. If you do, write in the comments below. Thank you very much for joining Malvern House in Brighton, I hope you have a lovely day.

Students usually tell me they want to improve their speaking. However, ‘speaking’ is such a broad area it’s sometimes unclear exactly what they want to get better and how they intend to do it. Having taught students for ten years, I think that when they say they want to improve their speaking, they’re often talking about fluency.

What is fluency? To me, speaking fluently means producing more language, faster. To speak without hesitating. You want to express yourself as fully and quickly as possible, but the words don’t always come out as easily as you’d like.

The first thing I would recommend students who want to speak fluently is to learn as much vocabulary as possible. And don’t just learn individual words; learn phrases, collocations and expressions. I had a student who would watch shows on Netflix and write down any expressions or collocations he heard. He’d then try and apply them in his speech, which helped him speak fluently (although it took him longer to watch his favourite shows). Learning a good amount of new words every day, testing yourself on them and using them in your speech helps you speak fluently. I’ve seen this with my students.

The second thing that helps you become more fluent is repetition. Sometimes the problem with studying English is you speak about a topic in one class then forget about it. Native speakers of any language become fluent because they talk about the same things again and again. Just think about how fluently you can order a coffee, for example. So repeat words, phrases or conversations, and see how quickly you speak after some time.

The final thing to do is forget about grammar mistakes. You can’t speak fluently if you’re obsessing over which perfect tense to use. So try sometimes to have conversations in and out of class without worrying about making errors. Of course grammar is important, but it’s not the only thing to practise.

So hopefully if you do some of those things, you’ll start expressing yourself without hesitating so much. It takes time and motivation to speak fluently, but I’ve seen my students really improve their speaking skills during their time in London. Push yourself and don’t be afraid of mistakes.
